Objective 5
Effectively articulate game design elements
and mechanics across disciplines utilizing
written and verbal communication skills.
Carrier
Carrier is an open-world first-person co-op shooter set at sea. This game is currently still in production in production studio at the University of Advancing Technology and is being made in Unreal Engine 5. In spring 2023 I helped develop the game as a Design Lead for the project. I absolutely loved working on this project, I was very nervous when I first started out since I have never been a leader of a department for a project of this size and I wasn’t sure if I was cut out for it but it turns out I was wrong because I flourished as a leader and I loved being able to step up and help the project become a success and I am looking forward to implementing my new skills as a leader. I now understand a lot more of what goes into being successful in that role. This project works well for this objective because I was able to effectively articulate game design elements and mechanics utilizing written and verbal communication skills. We had a lot of documents that all the designers worked on in this project. I helped with these documents as well as created my own over the course of the semester. I helped the other designers reword their documents to make more sense for the entire team. I also helped communicate our ideas to the other teams, artists, and programmers, so they could get a better sense of what we wanted them to work on.
GDDs
My GDDs include not only ones I made myself but also ones I worked on with other people. These documents work well for this objective because I was able to effectively articulate game design elements and mechanics utilizing written and verbal communication skills. I was able to create GDDs that other disciplines could use and understand the idea/design of the game.
Genre Discussions
My genre discussions include many different genres including Multiplayer-versus, Multiplayer - Co-op, Stealth, Strategy / RTS / Tower Defense, and Hack n' Slash / Beat em' Up. These documents work well for this objective because I was able to effectively articulate game design elements and mechanics utilizing written and verbal communication skills. With these genre discussions I talked about what the genre entails, what are good examples of a genre and what are bad examples of a genre. This shows that I am able to articulate design across multiple genres and designs.
